About the test

Transferrin is a protein that transports iron in blood. Measuring it complements assessment of the body’s iron supply. It is considered together with iron, ferritin and iron-binding capacity when investigating anaemia and disorders of iron metabolism. The amount of transport protein may change in iron deficiency, inflammation and altered protein metabolism.

Transferrin is not a direct measurement of iron stores. Liver condition, nutrition and hormonal changes may affect it. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess iron transport.
  • Complement investigation of the causes of anaemia.
