About the test
Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme whose main sources in blood are associated with the liver, bile ducts and bone tissue. Its activity is investigated when impaired bile flow is suspected and to clarify certain changes in bone metabolism. GGT, other liver measurements and bone investigations may be used to distinguish the source of an increase.
The value depends on age and physiological state; it may differ in growing children and during pregnancy without liver disease. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Assess alkaline phosphatase activity.
- Clarify changes involving the liver, bile ducts or bone metabolism.
