About the test

SFMC are soluble fibrin monomer complexes that appear when fibrin formation is activated in the circulation. The test is an additional assessment of coagulation activation. It may be ordered as part of investigation of haemostasis disorders when the doctor needs to compare fibrin formation with consumption and breakdown.

The measurement depends on the method and is not interchangeable with D-dimer. An increase alone does not diagnose thrombosis or disseminated intravascular coagulation and does not determine whether treatment is needed. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess a marker of fibrin formation.
  • Complement a comprehensive haemostasis investigation.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
