About the test

The test measures IgG antibodies to Leptospira, the bacteria that cause leptospirosis. Exposure may occur through water or soil contaminated with excretions from infected animals. The antibody response does not develop immediately, and IgG may persist after exposure, so the result is particularly dependent on disease timing and possible exposure history.

An isolated IgG result does not confirm acute leptospirosis or determine disease severity. For diagnosis, the doctor may compare results from different methods or samples collected at different times. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the IgG response when leptospirosis is suspected.
  • Complement investigation after significant exposure when symptoms are present.
