About the test

The test detects antibodies to thyroglobulin, a component of the thyroid gland. It does not measure thyroid hormone levels. These autoantibodies may occur in autoimmune thyroid diseases. The test helps clarify a possible cause of changes in thyroid function.

Antibodies alone do not show how well the thyroid is functioning and do not always require treatment. The result is compared with TSH, free T4 and clinical information. Thyroglobulin antibodies are also important when interpreting thyroglobulin itself.

Why it is ordered

  • Clarify a possible autoimmune cause of thyroid dysfunction.
  • Complement hormone testing ordered by an endocrinologist.
