About the test

Alpha-fetoprotein is a protein actively produced during fetal development; its level in adults is usually much lower. Outside pregnancy, it is used in monitoring selected liver tumours and germ cell tumours. The indication depends on the clinical situation.

An increase can occur in conditions other than malignant tumours, and a normal result does not exclude disease. The test is not intended as a standalone cancer screening test; it is assessed together with examination, imaging and other investigations. During pregnancy, AFP has a different diagnostic purpose and requires separate interpretation.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement investigation ordered by a relevant specialist.
  • Assess changes in the marker during follow-up and treatment.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
