About the test
CYFRA 21-1 is a fragment of cytokeratin 19 that may be used as a circulating marker of selected epithelial tumours. In particular, it may complement monitoring of non-small-cell lung cancer and assessment of changes during treatment.
An increase can occur in conditions other than malignant tumours, and a normal result does not exclude disease. The test is not intended as a standalone cancer screening test; it is assessed together with examination, imaging and other investigations. An increase does not establish tumour type; other clinical and morphological information is needed for diagnosis.
