About the test

This test measures IgG antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV). A positive IgG result usually indicates previous contact with the virus, but does not show when infection occurred or whether the virus is active now.

Serology alone does not establish congenital CMV infection or assess organ damage. Depending on the clinical question, the doctor may use IgG avidity or methods that detect the virus. Negative antibodies at an early stage do not exclude infection.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the antibody response to CMV.
  • Complement testing when appropriately clinically indicated.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
