About the test

This test detects IgG antibodies to herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2. IgG usually reflects a previously established immune response; antibodies may persist for a long time. If the result is combined for both types, it does not distinguish HSV-1 from HSV-2.

Serology does not determine the site of infection or prove that current lesions are active. Early negative and false-positive results are possible; if necessary, the doctor confirms uncertain findings. When a lesion is present, an appropriate direct test is selected.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the serological response to HSV, taking the method’s limitations into account.
  • Discuss the need for direct or confirmatory testing with a doctor.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
