About the test
This test detects IgG antibodies to Toxocara, associated with toxocariasis. This examines the immune response, rather than searching for the parasite itself. Antibodies may persist after a previous infection; cross-reactions with other parasites are possible. Human toxocariasis affects tissues; the result is compared with clinical signs, eosinophils and other tests. Antibodies do not establish the site of involvement.
The presence of antibodies does not automatically indicate active disease or the need for treatment. The significance of the result depends on symptoms, suspected contact, immune status and confirmatory information; a negative test early after infection does not always exclude infection.
