About the test
PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in a scraping specimen. The test targets herpes simplex viruses HSV-1 and HSV-2, which may cause skin and mucosal lesions.
Diagnostic value depends on the sampling site and stage of illness. A negative test does not exclude herpes when viral shedding is intermittent; a positive result does not show when infection occurred.
The scraping site should correspond to the purpose of the investigation. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.
