About the test
PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in a blood specimen. The test targets herpes simplex viruses HSV-1 and HSV-2, which may cause skin and mucosal lesions.
Blood PCR is not used as a routine test for diagnosing localised genital herpes. A doctor may order it when disseminated infection is suspected; an appropriate specimen is selected for skin and mucosal lesions.
The usefulness of a blood test depends on the clinical situation and the timing of specimen collection. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.
Why it is ordered
- Detect herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV) genetic material in the specified specimen.
- Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.
How to prepare
Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
