About the test
17-hydroxyprogesterone is an intermediate in steroid hormone production in the adrenal glands and gonads. It is measured when investigating congenital adrenal hyperplasia and clarifying selected causes of androgen excess.
The measurement does not replace conventional progesterone. Its value depends on time of day, age and cycle phase; the doctor may sometimes order additional tests. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.
Why it is ordered
- Complement diagnosis of steroid synthesis disorders.
- Clarify possible adrenal causes of hyperandrogenism.
