About the test

ALT is an enzyme whose activity in blood is primarily used to assess possible liver cell injury. When liver cells are injured, more of the enzyme may enter the bloodstream. The test is ordered when other liver measurements are abnormal, when symptoms of liver disease are present and for monitoring during treatment.

ALT does not identify the cause of a change and is not the same as an overall assessment of liver function. AST, bilirubin and other information are usually considered for clarification. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess possible liver injury.
  • Monitor enzyme activity during disease or treatment.
