About the test

Albumin is the main plasma protein and is produced in the liver. It helps retain fluid in blood vessels and transports various substances. Albumin measurement complements investigation of liver disease, kidney disease, nutritional disorders and conditions involving protein loss. It is also considered when assessing certain other laboratory measurements, including total calcium.

A reduction is not always due solely to nutrition or liver function: inflammation, protein loss and fluid balance may also affect the value. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the albumin concentration.
  • Clarify the causes of changes in total protein or oedema.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
