About the test

AMA M2 are autoantibodies to certain mitochondrial antigens. The test may help a doctor diagnose primary biliary cholangitis, particularly when there are signs of impaired bile flow.

The result is assessed alongside biochemical liver tests, symptoms and other investigations. The presence of antibodies does not measure the extent of liver damage or replace comprehensive diagnosis.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement the diagnosis of primary biliary cholangitis.
  • Clarify a possible autoimmune mechanism behind changes in liver test results.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
