About the test

Antinuclear antibodies target components of the body’s own cells, primarily their nuclear structures. ANA Screen is used as one stage of investigation when a systemic autoimmune disease is clinically suspected.

A positive result may also occur outside these diseases. The significance of the result depends on the method, antigen panel, symptoms and follow-up tests; a single test does not establish a specific diagnosis.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect antinuclear autoantibodies as part of the investigation ordered.
  • Help the doctor determine whether follow-up tests are needed.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
