About the test

ASO consists of antibodies to streptolysin O, a substance produced by certain streptococci. The test helps assess the immune response following a streptococcal infection. It is used when the doctor suspects a link between current symptoms and a previous infection, for example when assessing certain post-streptococcal complications. Antibodies do not appear immediately and may persist after the infection has resolved.

An elevated ASO does not prove an active infection and is not, on its own, a reason to prescribe an antibiotic. Other diagnostic approaches are used for an acute sore throat. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess signs of previous exposure to streptococci.
  • Complement investigation of post-streptococcal complications.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
