About the test

AST is an enzyme found in the liver, muscles and several other tissues. Its activity in blood helps assess possible injury to these cells. It is often measured together with ALT when investigating the liver. AST can also increase after muscle injury and in other conditions, so the test is not considered separately from the clinical picture.

AST activity is not specific to the liver. Cell damage during sample collection or processing can also affect the laboratory result. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement a liver assessment.
  • Clarify enzyme changes together with ALT and other measurements.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
