About the test

In a bacterial culture, the specimen is placed in conditions suitable for bacterial growth. If a clinically significant microorganism is isolated, susceptibility testing helps the doctor select an appropriate medicine.

This service covers different sampling sites; the specific specimen is agreed in advance. Growth of microbiota may reflect carriage or specimen contamination, so the result is assessed alongside signs of infection rather than used to select an antibiotic on your own.

Why it is ordered

  • Isolate bacteria from a specific clinical specimen.
  • Assess the antibiotic susceptibility of a significant isolate if it can be recovered.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
