About the test
The test assesses the presence of bile pigments in urine and may complement investigation of the liver and bile ducts. Certain bilirubin metabolism products in urine can change when processing or excretion is impaired. The particular measurement and reporting format depend on the laboratory method; the service name does not fully specify them.
The result cannot be regarded as a definitive diagnosis of hepatitis or bile flow obstruction. It is compared with blood bilirubin and other liver measurements. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Complement assessment of bile pigment metabolism.
- Clarify changes involving the liver and bile ducts.
