About the test
The test measures the time taken for a blood sample to form a clot under the conditions of the laboratory method used. It is a general measurement of coagulation that may form part of investigation of suspected haemostasis disorders. Different methods exist for capillary blood, so the method and its reference interval must accompany the result.
The test does not replace a coagulation panel, and a normal result does not exclude all causes of bleeding. Sample collection and testing conditions considerably affect the measurement. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Complement assessment of blood clotting.
- Investigate changes in haemostasis as directed by a doctor.
