Blood electrolytes K+, Na+, Cl-, Ca2+ and pH

This panel combines sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and pH measurements to help assess electrolyte and acid-base balance together. Electrolytes are involved in muscle and nerve function, fluid distribution and regulation of acidity. The components of this service are specified in its name; other blood gas measurements should not be added without laboratory confirmation.

For pH and ionised calcium, the type of blood, transport conditions and measurement timing are critical. Venous and arterial measurements are not fully interchangeable. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
