About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in a blood specimen. PCR targets Borrelia genetic material and differs from antibody testing for borreliosis.

Serology usually forms the basis of laboratory investigation for Lyme disease. Blood PCR does not replace clinical assessment and is not suitable for independently ruling out infection after a tick bite.

The usefulness of a blood test depends on the clinical situation and the timing of specimen collection. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect Borrelia genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
