About the test
PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in a blood specimen. Brucella are bacteria that cause brucellosis. The molecular test targets material from the organism, rather than antibodies to it.
The result is compared with animal contact, other risk factors and investigation findings. A negative blood test does not exclude brucellosis, and detected DNA does not always characterise disease activity.
The usefulness of a blood test depends on the clinical situation and the timing of specimen collection. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.
