About the test

The test measures IgG antibodies to Brucella, the bacteria that cause brucellosis. IgG reflects an immune response to exposure and may persist after a past infection. The test is used when brucellosis is clinically suspected, together with other methods and information about contact with animals or contaminated products.

A single positive IgG result does not distinguish current from past infection. An early negative result and cross-reactions limit the test’s standalone diagnostic value. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the IgG response when brucellosis is suspected.
  • Complement serological investigation ordered by a doctor.
