About the test

The test measures IgM antibodies to Brucella and helps investigate the immune response when brucellosis is suspected. IgM may appear early in infection, although the timing of detection varies. The result is considered together with IgG or other ordered tests, symptom duration and the likelihood of exposure.

A positive IgM result is not the same as confirmed acute brucellosis: nonspecific and cross-reactions are possible. A negative result early in illness also does not exclude infection. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Investigate the IgM response in people with symptoms of brucellosis.
  • Complement comprehensive laboratory diagnosis.
