About the test

C-peptide is formed in the pancreas when the body produces its own insulin. Its level helps assess how much of this production is preserved. The test is used to clarify selected disorders of carbohydrate metabolism and investigate the causes of low glucose.

The measurement depends on glucose level and kidney function; it does not replace the tests used to diagnose diabetes mellitus. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the body’s own insulin secretion.
  • Complement investigation of glucose abnormalities.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
