About the test
C-reactive protein is a marker of the inflammatory response whose concentration changes in infections, tissue injury and other conditions. The protein is produced in the liver in response to inflammatory signals. The test is used to complement investigation of suspected inflammation and monitor its intensity during disease or treatment.
CRP does not identify the site or cause of inflammation and cannot independently distinguish all bacterial and viral infections. The high-sensitivity cardiac option is a separate item. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Assess laboratory signs of inflammation.
- Monitor changes in the inflammatory response.
