About the test

CA 125 is a protein marker that may increase in certain ovarian diseases and other conditions. It is used mainly to monitor established disease and as part of investigation of an adnexal mass.

An increase can occur in conditions other than malignant tumours, and a normal result does not exclude disease. The test is not intended as a standalone cancer screening test; it is assessed together with examination, imaging and other investigations. Menstruation, endometriosis and other benign conditions can also affect the level.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement investigation ordered by a relevant specialist.
  • Assess changes in the marker during follow-up and treatment.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
