About the test
CA 15-3 is a circulating marker that may be used in monitoring certain forms of breast cancer. The test most often helps assess the course of an established disease and changes during treatment when the doctor considers the marker informative.
An increase can occur in conditions other than malignant tumours, and a normal result does not exclude disease. The test is not intended as a standalone cancer screening test; it is assessed together with examination, imaging and other investigations. It does not replace breast assessment and is not suitable for standalone early tumour detection.
