About the test

CA 19-9 is a marker that may increase in selected tumours of the pancreas and bile ducts. It is used mainly to monitor the course of established disease and treatment response together with other information.

An increase can occur in conditions other than malignant tumours, and a normal result does not exclude disease. The test is not intended as a standalone cancer screening test; it is assessed together with examination, imaging and other investigations. Inflammation and impaired bile flow can also increase the measurement; not everyone produces a measurable amount of this marker.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement investigation ordered by a relevant specialist.
  • Assess changes in the marker during follow-up and treatment.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
