About the test
CA 72-4 is a tumour-associated marker that may be used in monitoring selected stomach and ovarian tumours. The test helps complement assessment of established disease and changes during treatment as directed by an oncologist.
An increase can occur in conditions other than malignant tumours, and a normal result does not exclude disease. The test is not intended as a standalone cancer screening test; it is assessed together with examination, imaging and other investigations. Benign digestive diseases and other conditions can also change the level.
