About the test

Calcitonin is a hormone produced by thyroid C cells and is involved in regulating calcium metabolism. It is measured when medullary thyroid cancer is suspected and during follow-up after treatment of this disease.

It is not a universal test for every type of thyroid cancer. Non-tumour conditions may also affect the level; an elevated result requires medical clarification. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement assessment of thyroid C cells.
  • Monitor the condition after treatment of medullary cancer.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
