About the test

The test measures total blood calcium, a measurement associated with muscle and nervous system function, clotting and bone metabolism. Calcium is present in blood in protein-bound and free forms. Total concentration is investigated in mineral metabolism disorders, kidney disease and parathyroid disease, usually in combination with other measurements.

Albumin affects total calcium, so the result does not always reflect the biologically active fraction. Ionised calcium is listed separately in the price list. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess calcium metabolism.
  • Complement assessment of the kidneys, bones and parathyroid glands.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
