About the test

CEA is a protein marker used in monitoring certain malignant tumours, especially of the colon and rectum. Changes over time may complement assessment of treatment effectiveness and subsequent follow-up after a diagnosis has been established.

An increase can occur in conditions other than malignant tumours, and a normal result does not exclude disease. The test is not intended as a standalone cancer screening test; it is assessed together with examination, imaging and other investigations. Smoking and certain non-tumour diseases may increase CEA, which is important when comparing results.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement investigation ordered by a relevant specialist.
  • Assess changes in the marker during follow-up and treatment.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
