About the test

The cardiolipin microprecipitation reaction is a non-treponemal serological test for syphilis. It detects antibodies to lipid antigens and is used in a diagnostic algorithm with treponemal confirmation. If the laboratory reports a quantitative titre, the doctor may use comparable results to monitor treatment response.

A reactive result can also relate to other conditions, including certain infections and autoimmune processes. An early negative test does not exclude syphilis; diagnosis is not based on a single reaction. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Perform the non-treponemal stage of syphilis investigation.
  • If a quantitative result is provided, complement medical monitoring of treatment.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
