About the test

Ceruloplasmin is a protein that binds most of the copper in blood. Its measurement helps investigate disorders of copper metabolism. The test is used, in particular, when Wilson disease and certain liver diseases are suspected. The result is considered together with blood or urine copper, examination and other information selected by the doctor.

A low level is not sufficient to confirm Wilson disease. The concentration may depend on inflammation, pregnancy, liver condition and protein loss. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess a copper transport protein.
  • Complement investigation of disorders of copper metabolism.
