About the test

This test measures IgG antibodies to Chlamydia pneumoniae, a bacterium that may cause respiratory tract infections. Serology may complement specialist investigation, but an individual result does not prove the cause of a current cough or pneumonia. The nature of the antibody response depends on the time since contact.

Serological methods have specificity limitations and depend on the test system; comparison of paired samples is sometimes required. Appropriate molecular tests are preferred to confirm acute infection. The result is assessed alongside symptoms, examination and other information, rather than used as an independent basis for treatment.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement testing when C. pneumoniae is clinically suspected.
  • Clarify immune-response information in combination with direct methods.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
