About the test

Chlorides are electrolytes involved in maintaining fluid and acid-base balance. The test measures their concentration in blood. The measurement is used together with sodium, potassium and other information when investigating fluid disorders, kidney function and the acidity of the internal environment. A change may accompany gastrointestinal losses or the effects of treatment.

A chloride value alone rarely establishes the cause of a disorder. Its relationship to other electrolytes and clinical signs of altered fluid balance are important. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess chloride concentration.
  • Complement investigation of fluid and acid-base balance.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
