About the test

A conjunctival swab helps assess cellular and microbial elements in material from the surface of the eye. Microscopy may be used as an additional method for particular inflammatory eye changes at the ophthalmologist’s discretion. The sampling site must be specified accurately, and the result compared with symptoms and examination findings.

The swab does not detect all causes of conjunctivitis or replace targeted virological or bacteriological testing. When pain or reduced vision occurs, a laboratory test does not replace an in-person assessment. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the microscopic composition of conjunctival material.
  • Complement an ophthalmological assessment.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
