About the test

The Pap test examines cervical cells and helps detect changes that may precede cancer. It is a cytological screening method: a specialist assesses cells on a stained slide. This item describes the conventional smear option; liquid-based cytology is listed separately. The choice of testing and subsequent actions depends on age, history and previous results.

Abnormal cytology is not a diagnosis of cancer and may require clarification. A Pap test is not a standalone HPV test and does not replace testing for sexually transmitted infections. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect precancerous changes in cervical cells.
  • Complement follow-up after previous cytological abnormalities.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
