About the test
Creatine kinase is an enzyme associated with muscle energy metabolism. Its total activity in blood helps assess muscle tissue injury. The test is used for muscle pain, weakness and conditions accompanied by muscle cell destruction, as well as for monitoring directed by a doctor. Total creatine kinase is not the same as separately measuring the CK-MB isoenzyme.
Activity can increase after unfamiliar physical exertion, injuries and injections. The test should not be regarded as a standalone modern test for a heart attack. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
