About the test
Creatinine is a product of muscle metabolism that is excreted by the kidneys. Its concentration in blood is used to assess kidney filtration. The test helps detect and monitor impaired kidney function. Using creatinine and patient information, the doctor may assess the estimated glomerular filtration rate; whether this calculation is included should be checked on the laboratory report.
Muscle mass, diet and certain medicines affect the concentration. A single value cannot establish the cause of impaired kidney function. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Assess kidney function.
- Monitor changes in kidney filtration during disease or treatment.
