About the test
Cytology assesses individual cells and cell groups under a microscope after the slide has been stained. The stains listed in the name help distinguish cellular structures and sample characteristics. The significance of the test depends on the sampling site: cytology is used to assess inflammatory, reactive and suspicious cellular changes for the particular reason specified by the doctor.
The list of stains does not mean that all are necessarily used for every sample. Cytology does not always replace histology, and insufficient cellularity may limit the conclusion. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Assess the cellular composition of submitted material.
- Detect changes that require further clarification.
