About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in urine. Cytomegalovirus belongs to the herpesvirus family and may remain in the body after infection.

The presence of viral material is assessed in the context of age, immune status and specimen type. Viral shedding does not always indicate organ disease; this test does not measure antibodies to the virus. A positive urine result may reflect viral shedding.

A urine test concerns this specimen and does not exclude the presence of the organism at other sites in the body. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect cytomegalovirus (CMV) genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
