Cytomegalovirus IgM (HHV-V)

This test measures IgM antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV). IgM may appear during a primary infection, but also occurs during reactivation and may persist for a long time. It is therefore assessed alongside IgG and other information.

Serology alone does not establish congenital CMV infection or assess organ damage. Depending on the clinical question, the doctor may use IgG avidity or methods that detect the virus. Negative antibodies at an early stage do not exclude infection.

• Assess the antibody response to CMV.
• Complement testing when appropriately clinically indicated.
