About the test

D-dimer is a protein fragment formed when stabilised fibrin in a blood clot is broken down. The test is used in diagnostic algorithms for suspected venous thrombosis or thromboembolism. At particular pre-test disease probabilities, a negative result helps the doctor exclude thrombosis; a positive result usually requires further assessment.

D-dimer may increase during inflammation, pregnancy, after surgery and with age. An increase alone does not prove that a clot is present and is not a reason to start anticoagulants independently. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement investigation of suspected thrombosis.
  • Help exclude thromboembolism within an appropriate clinical algorithm.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
