Dehydroepiandrosterone is a steroid precursor of androgens and oestrogens, a substantial proportion of which is produced in the adrenal glands. The test may complement investigation of signs of androgen excess and selected disorders of steroid metabolism.
DHEA and DHEA sulphate are different measured forms and their results are not interchangeable. The measurement is not a standalone assessment of how youthful the body is. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.
