About the test
The test is intended to detect Demodex mites in skin material for dermatological or ophthalmological indications. These microscopic mites can be present in people without disease. Findings are therefore assessed together with the condition of the skin and eyelids and the person’s symptoms; the sampling site and method are chosen according to the clinical question.
Detecting Demodex alone does not prove the cause of all rashes or irritation. A negative result depends on sample quality and location. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
